For those who do not know, Katie is due on the 30th of the month. We had a final sonogram yesterday and it looks like the baby will be arriving sooner rather than later.

We are scrambling to prepare and hope to have it all ready in time.

MIT $12 computer project is based on Apple II: ”

We’ve proved that you can build a cheap laptop (if not quite one that goes for $100). That’s great, but it’s still pretty expensive. One group of MIT students aims to shoot even lower: they want to build a computer for $12—hey, that’s less than an Andrew Jackson.

But if your aim is going to be ‘affordable,’ then you might as well start with something that’s tried and tested. In the case of the $12 computer team, their jumping-off point is the time-honored classic Apple II.

‘My generation all had Apple IIs that we learned to type and play games on,’ the 27-year-old said. ‘If we can get buy-in from programmers, we can develop these devices and give (Third World) schools Apple II computer labs like the ones I grew up with.’

Oh, man. That’s a great idea. If it’s anything like our junior high school’s Apple II lab, then pretty soon, the whole Third World is going to be full of monitors continuously scrolling ‘I AM AWESOME!’.

Andrew Jackson would be proud.

I was wrong, dead wrong. 

No stock in store despite what Top Muffin said.

I had a lenghty discussion with an employee who detailed the new process for selling phones that will begin tomorrow, 7/26.

When the store opens at 8 AM for iPhone sales, Apple employees will take information and order requests from anyone in line and hand out claim tickets. These tickets can then be exchanged for same day stock. That way you do not have to wait in line all day or hang out in the store pestering staff. In theory it is first come, first served. So they will set aside for the day if you get a claim ticket.

If there is not sufficient stock for the claims, you need to start over the next day.

I will be in line tomorrow morning to test this out.

Claiming personal savings rates are the lowest they’ve been since the Great Depression, Yahoo Finance sets out to identify five signs that you’re living beyond your means. For example:

More Than 28% of Income Goes To Your House: Calculate what percentage of your monthly income goes toward your mortgage, property taxes and insurance. If it’s more than 28% of your gross income, then you are likely in over your head.

Why is 28% the magic number? Historically, conservative lenders have used the 28% threshold because their experience has told them that this is the rate at which the average person can get by, make their mortgage payments and still enjoy a reasonable standard of living.

The article also calls out low credit scores (below 600), low savings rates (below 5%), rising credit card balances, and escalating bills as other signs that you’re living well beyond your means. For starters I was offered a job with a media and development firm run by a former colleague and friend. I accepted the position and will be taking a position as Sr Project Manager starting in June. This was a difficult decision as I excel in my current position and hold a wealth of specialized knowledge that is not easily reproduced. We are also in the process of moving, we sold our house and are going to rent for a year and then buy a new home. We just found a decent place to rent, a 4 bedroom house in a quiet neighborhood. We are moving mid-June..

Lastly the baby, another girl is due at the end of August. I am very excited.
